The Centre is prioritising universal insurance coverage as a cornerstone of its broader financial inclusion agenda, according to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The initiative aims to extend protection and security to India's underserved populations through wider access to insurance products and pension schemes.
Beyond insurance, the government's financial inclusion roadmap encompasses several complementary measures. Enhanced credit access for underbanked segments, artificial intelligence-enabled skill development programmes, and targeted banking reforms form part of the comprehensive strategy to bring more Indians into the formal financial system.
The multi-pronged approach reflects recognition that financial inclusion requires simultaneous attention to savings mechanisms, risk mitigation, credit availability and digital capability. By combining insurance expansion with pension coverage improvements, the government seeks to address both immediate protection needs and long-term security concerns among vulnerable populations.
The emphasis on AI training underscores the government's intent to leverage technology in building financial literacy and digital competence among citizens. Banking reforms are expected to streamline service delivery and reduce barriers to account opening and formal credit access across rural and semi-urban areas.
