Universal Studios Japan to invest $2.4bn in major theme park expansion

Universal Studios Japan is set to embark on an ambitious expansion programme with investment of up to $2.4 billion, according to reports citing company planning documents. The project will utilise a 60,000 square-meter parcel of land situated next to the existing theme park facility in Osaka to introduce fresh attractions and facilities.

The expansion represents a significant commitment to growth at the Japanese location, which has emerged as one of the operator's key Asian markets. Universal Studios Japan has been a major draw for both domestic and international visitors since its opening in 2001, and the expansion is expected to strengthen its competitive position in the regional theme park sector.

The development timeline and specific details regarding the nature of new attractions have not been disclosed. The project comes as theme parks across Asia continue to compete intensely for visitor spending through innovative offerings and expanded capacity.

Universal Studios Japan is operated by Comcast-owned NBCUniversal in partnership with Oriental Land Co., the Japanese entertainment and real estate company. The expansion aligns with broader efforts by major theme park operators to invest in their flagship Asian properties amid recovering tourism demand in the post-pandemic period.
