Universities must embed AI ethics in curriculum, says educator

An official from India's National Council for Teacher Education has stressed that educational institutions must actively shape the country's future by integrating emerging technologies into the classroom. Speaking at the inaugural session of a specialized faculty development programme, the NCTE member underscored the critical role educators play in preparing students for an AI-driven world.

The programme, hosted at Andhra University, runs for five days and focuses on equipping faculty members with knowledge and frameworks for teaching generative AI. The curriculum addresses key dimensions including ethical considerations, moral values, and alignment with the National Education Policy 2020—India's overarching framework for educational reform.

University leadership echoed the emphasis on modernization, with the Vice-Chancellor noting that contemporary technologies must become an integral part of curricula across disciplines. The initiative reflects growing recognition among Indian educational institutions that AI literacy and responsible AI use are becoming essential components of student preparation.

The programme targets the challenge of bridging the gap between rapid technological advancement and traditional educational approaches. By grounding AI education in ethical frameworks and policy guidelines, the initiative aims to ensure that students develop not only technical competency but also the moral reasoning required for responsible innovation.
