The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) has obtained a letter of intent from India's University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish a new academic campus in Hyderabad. The approval marks a significant milestone in the growing internationalisation of higher education in India, with CU Denver becoming the first publicly-funded American university to receive authorisation for a degree-granting facility in the country.
The development follows Illinois Institute of Technology's entry into the Indian higher education market last year. Chicago-based Illinois, a private institution, launched its Mumbai campus in 2023 and admitted its first cohort of students in September. CU Denver's Hyderabad campus will also be the first foreign university presence in Telangana state.
According to university officials, the expansion reflects CU Denver's long-standing commitment to expanding access to quality education. The institution has maintained connections with Indian students for decades and views the new campus as an extension of these ties. The Hyderabad initiative will enable the university to bring its academic programmes and institutional experience directly to students in India.
The approval represents a broader trend of American universities establishing international campuses to meet growing demand for higher education in Asia. India's higher education sector has increasingly welcomed foreign university partnerships as part of efforts to enhance academic offerings and global competitiveness.
