University of Ruhuna distributes free spectacles to 458 students

The University of Ruhuna hosted the second phase of the free spectacles programme on Saturday, a continuation of the President's Fund initiative aimed at supporting students' educational access and wellbeing. The distribution event saw 458 students receive spectacles, all of whom had been identified as requiring optical correction during a comprehensive eye-screening clinic held on 10 October.

The programme, implemented on presidential directive, addresses a significant barrier to academic performance for students with uncorrected vision. By providing free eyeglasses to those in need, the initiative seeks to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder students' ability to participate fully in their university education.

The screening and distribution phases represent a coordinated effort to identify and assist students across the university system. The successful rollout at the University of Ruhuna demonstrates the programme's expansion beyond initial phases, with plans to extend similar services to other tertiary institutions.
