UP BJP legislator accused of unlawful detention over alleged jewellery theft

Kunwar Sushant Singh, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party legislator representing Badhapur constituency in Bijnor district, is at the centre of allegations involving unlawful detention and assault. According to reports, Singh allegedly confined three young men at his residence in Ratupura village in the neighbouring Moradabad district following claims that a gold bangle had gone missing from his property.

The accused MLA allegedly subjected the detainees to physical violence, including suspending one of them upside down and inflicting beatings, according to statements filed in connection with the matter. The exact circumstances leading to their initial detention remain unclear, though the incident is believed to stem from accusations regarding the missing jewellery item.

The allegations have drawn scrutiny from opposition quarters and civil liberties advocates, who have raised questions about the abuse of power by elected representatives. Such incidents have periodically surfaced across the state, highlighting concerns about extrajudicial action and vigilantism by individuals in positions of authority.

Authorities have reportedly been made aware of the allegations, though official statements on any formal investigation or action remain unavailable at this stage. The development adds to growing criticism regarding governance and rule of law in the state.
