UP Election Body Flags Name Irregularities Across 11 Constituencies

The Uttar Pradesh Election Commission has reported finding 158 irregularities among approximately 14.81 lakh voter entries spread across 11 constituencies in the state. According to the chief electoral officer, the anomalies primarily stem from a technical issue in the voter registration database management system.

The problem has been traced to software that converted names through translation rather than the standard transliteration process. Transliteration maintains the phonetic representation of names as they appear in regional languages when rendered in English script, while translation alters the meaning or form of the names themselves.

Election officials have initiated a review process to identify and correct the affected entries in the voter rolls. The discovery comes amid ongoing efforts to ensure the accuracy and integrity of electoral databases ahead of elections in the state.

The electoral body has not disclosed whether the irregularities will necessitate any formal amendments to the voter rolls or whether corrective measures can be implemented through routine database updates. Officials said they are coordinating with technical teams to prevent similar issues in future voter registration cycles.
