UP food safety raids uncover contamination in pre-Diwali sweet shops

Food safety officials in Uttar Pradesh have conducted extensive inspections of sweet and savoury snack shops across 38 districts as part of a pre-Diwali quality assurance campaign. The drive, branded 'Purity is Auspiciousness', examined 260 retail outlets and collected 303 samples for laboratory analysis, revealing serious violations in food safety standards.

Inspectors documented disturbing conditions at multiple locations, including rodent infestation on confectionery displays and preparation of sweets in unhygienic surroundings. In Amroha district, authorities detected starch adulteration in paneer, a critical food safety concern given the ingredient's widespread use during the festive season.

The comprehensive enforcement action resulted in the destruction of approximately 7,660 kilograms of food products deemed unsafe for consumption. The raids underscore recurring challenges with food quality oversight in the retail sector, particularly during peak festive shopping periods when consumer vigilance typically declines.

Uttar Pradesh's food safety department has not announced further enforcement measures or penalties against violating vendors. The campaign reflects broader national efforts to ensure food integrity during major festivals when demand for sweets and processed foods surges significantly.
