UP man booked for triple talaq over phone after dowry demand

Police in Uttar Pradesh have registered a case against six individuals, including a man who allegedly pronounced triple talaq over telephone, after a woman filed a complaint citing dowry harassment and marital cruelty. The complainant alleged that her husband resorted to the instant divorce method following his family's demands for additional dowry beyond what had been agreed upon at the time of marriage.

The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), India's new criminal code that came into effect in July 2023, as well as the Dowry Prohibition Act. The accused include the husband and five members of his family who were allegedly complicit in the dowry demands and subsequent abandonment.

The incident represents a continuing concern in several parts of northern India, where dowry-related disputes remain a significant source of marital discord. Authorities have indicated that investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the phone call and the family's demands for additional payments.

Triple talaq—the Islamic practice of instant divorce by pronouncing talaq three times—was made a criminal offense in India in 2019 through the Instant Triple Talaq Act. The law criminalizes the practice among Muslim communities and prescribes imprisonment and fines for violators.
