An anti-corruption team in Lalitpur district, Uttar Pradesh, arrested revenue official Vipul Tiwari on suspicion of accepting a bribe of 15,000 rupees, according to law enforcement sources on Tuesday.
Tiwari, a lekhpal or revenue scribe, was caught in the act of receiving the illicit payment. Upon realizing the anti-corruption unit had arrived at his location, he reportedly shut himself inside his residence and burned the currency notes over a gas flame in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Team members forced their way into the premises and recovered charred remnants of the destroyed currency notes. The incident underscores persistent allegations of corruption within revenue administration departments across India's bureaucratic ranks.
The case has been registered under relevant provisions of anti-corruption laws. Investigations into the matter are underway.
