MANILA — The University of the Philippines Rural High School (UPRHS) has condemned what it characterizes as red-tagging directed at the school and its community members over a martial law anniversary event held last month.

In a statement released Thursday, UPRHS addressed allegations that emerged following the commemoration of the 54th anniversary of the declaration of martial law in 1972. The school rejected characterizations that suggested the event had improper political motivations or objectives.

The institution emphasized that the observance was conducted as part of its educational curriculum and historical awareness programming. UPRHS stated that such commemorations are important for students to understand pivotal moments in Philippine history and their impact on society.

The controversy highlights ongoing sensitivities surrounding discussions of the martial law period in the Philippines. Red-tagging, or labeling individuals and organizations as communists or terrorists without substantiation, has become a contentious issue in the country's public discourse.
