UPI Mandate Costs to Rise from October 15, Impacting SIPs and Insurance

The Reserve Bank of India's updated UPI regulations will introduce separate cost structures for different payment types, affecting millions of retail investors and insurance policyholders relying on automated transactions. Starting October 15, one-time UPI transactions and recurring mandate-based payments will be treated under distinct frameworks, with implications for subscription investment plans and automated insurance premium collections.

Under the new structure, automated mandates—which power systematic investment plans (SIPs) and recurring insurance payments—will face different pricing mechanisms compared to standalone UPI transactions. This distinction aims to strengthen the regulatory framework governing recurring digital payments while managing systemic risks associated with automated deductions from customer accounts.

The change will primarily impact retail investors using SIPs for mutual fund investments and customers enrolled in auto-payment arrangements for insurance policies. Financial services providers are expected to adjust their operational procedures to comply with the revised guidelines, which may result in modified service charges or processing fees passed on to consumers.

Industry stakeholders have been preparing for this transition, with fintech platforms and insurance companies updating their backend systems to accommodate the dual-structure approach. The RBI's move reflects its broader effort to ensure better consumer protection and transparency in digital payment systems while maintaining operational efficiency across the UPI ecosystem.
