UPI marks decade as India's digital payment transformation engine

The Unified Payments Interface reached a major milestone on Tuesday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored its transformative impact on India's digital economy. Launched on August 25, 2016, by the National Payments Corporation of India under Reserve Bank of India oversight, UPI has evolved into the backbone of the country's digital payments ecosystem.

Modi highlighted the platform's remarkable scale and reach, describing it as a source of national pride. "A decade ago, UPI was rolled out, marking a major turning point in India's digital payments journey," the Prime Minister said in a statement, emphasizing that the sheer magnitude of UPI's growth demonstrates the success of India's digital transformation agenda.

Since its inception, UPI has demonstrated extraordinary expansion and momentum across the country. The platform has emerged as a critical driver of financial inclusion, extending banking services to previously underserved populations and enabling seamless transactions across urban and rural areas.

Modi called on citizens to share their UPI experiences and describe how the platform has impacted their lives. The appeal reflects broader efforts to recognize the role ordinary Indians have played in driving the adoption and success of digital payment infrastructure across the nation.
