Rahul Chari, cofounder and chief technology officer of PhonePe, has outlined the fintech company's strategic direction for the coming decade while addressing investor concerns about market concentration in India's digital payments sector.

Chari emphasized that the underlying architecture of the Unified Payments Interface provides inherent safeguards against concentration risk, with multiple players operating on a level playing field through the same interoperable infrastructure. The UPI ecosystem's design enables any institution to participate and process transactions, preventing any single entity from creating bottlenecks or controlling the payment flow.
The remarks come as India's digital payments landscape has attracted intense scrutiny regarding market dominance and competitive dynamics. PhonePe, which has emerged as one of the leading UPI players alongside Paytm and Google Pay, continues to invest in technology infrastructure to support the broader ecosystem's growth.
Chari's comments highlight the technical foundations that underscore India's payment system, which has seen exponential growth in recent years. The interoperable nature of UPI allows consumers and merchants to transact seamlessly across different service providers, reducing friction and fostering competition based on service quality rather than proprietary lock-in.
Looking ahead, PhonePe's leadership sees continued expansion opportunities within the digital payments space, with technology innovation playing a central role in the company's strategy for the next decade. The company remains committed to strengthening the infrastructure that supports merchant acquisition and consumer adoption across India's diverse markets.
