The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) should prioritize assessing candidates' dedication to public service during the interview stage of its recruitment process, according to UPSC Chairman Dr Ajay Kumar. Speaking on the selection methodology, Dr Kumar underscored the importance of identifying individuals who possess a genuine commitment to enter the civil services and commit themselves fully to nation-building.

The chairman's remarks highlight a critical dimension of the recruitment process that extends beyond technical knowledge and academic qualifications. According to Dr Kumar, the interview component offers a vital opportunity to evaluate whether candidates are driven by a service-oriented mindset rather than personal ambition or financial incentives.

The UPSC conducts civil service examinations to recruit officers for All India Services, including the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, and Indian Foreign Service, as well as various central government posts. The selection process comprises a written examination followed by a personality test or interview, which is designed to assess candidates' suitability for public administration roles.

Dr Kumar's emphasis on evaluating public service mindset reflects growing recognition within the civil services establishment that administrative effectiveness depends not merely on technical competence but also on the values and motivations of those who enter government service. The chairman's statement suggests that the commission intends to strengthen its interview protocols to better identify candidates whose career aspirations align with the principles of public service and nation-building.
