UPSC must release detailed mark breakdowns, candidates demand
Civil services examination aspirants are pushing the Union Public Service Commission to provide a transparent breakdown of marks scored in different sections. Experts argue such disclosure should come only after final results to avoid compromising the selection process.

Candidates appearing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination are calling on the commission to release a detailed distribution of marks across various components of the test, citing the need for better preparation strategies and transparency in the evaluation process.
Currently, the UPSC provides only aggregate scores to candidates, without breaking down performance across different subjects or sections. Aspirants argue that access to this granular information would help them identify their strengths and weaknesses more accurately, enabling them to refine their preparation approach for future attempts.
Experts advising on the matter have suggested a middle-ground approach: the UPSC should release detailed mark breakdowns only after the declaration of final results, once the entire examination cycle—including interviews and merit list preparation—has concluded. This timing would satisfy candidates' demands for transparency while safeguarding the ongoing selection process from potential bias or controversies.
"Releasing sectional marks before interviews and final results could inadvertently influence the selection committee's decision-making or lead to challenges to the process," observers noted. The proposal aligns with the practices followed by several other competitive examination bodies that balance transparency with procedural integrity.
The UPSC has not yet responded to these demands, and it remains unclear whether the commission will implement such a policy change in future examination cycles.
