BACOLOD CITY — Close to 100 advocates from the Federation of Urban Poor (FedUP) assembled along Araneta Street here early Thursday morning to pay respects to the legacy of former Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. on his 43rd death anniversary. The gathering, held on the national non-working holiday, saw participants waving Philippine flags and yellow ribbons—symbolic colors associated with Aquino's memory—as they laid flowers at his statue.
The annual commemoration draws supporters who view Aquino as a pivotal figure in Philippine history, particularly among activist and civil society groups. His assassination on August 21, 1983, at Manila International Airport marked a turning point in the country's political trajectory and remains a defining moment in the nation's democratic struggle.
The Bacolod gathering reflects continued public recognition of Aquino's influence beyond the national capital, with provincial communities observing the significant date through similar tributes and remembrances. The Federation of Urban Poor's participation underscores the enduring connection between grassroots advocacy movements and the historical figures who championed democratic reform.
