US airport access revived: TSA lets pre-screened travellers visit gates without tickets

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has introduced Gateside by TSA PreCheck, a new programme that permits qualified travellers to access airport gate lounges and concourses without holding a flight booking. The pilot initiative, operational at 13 US airports including Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona, marks a significant shift in airport accessibility policies that have remained largely restrictive for over two decades.

Under the programme, eligible TSA PreCheck members can obtain single-day visitor passes to enter secure airport areas. These visitors are required to undergo the same security screening procedures as ticketed passengers, ensuring security protocols remain unchanged despite the relaxed access restrictions.

The move represents a return to pre-9/11 practices, when family members and friends could accompany or farewell passengers at airport gates without purchasing tickets. Security protocols have since become significantly more stringent, with access to terminal areas beyond check-in counters generally restricted to ticketed passengers only.

The TSA's pilot programme aims to balance operational security with convenience, capitalising on the TSA PreCheck system's existing vetting mechanisms. Participants in the broader TSA PreCheck programme have already undergone background checks and security assessments, forming the basis for the agency's confidence in allowing these pre-approved travellers additional airport access.

The programme's success at the initial 13 airports may determine whether the TSA expands Gateside access to additional facilities nationwide, potentially reshaping airport visitation practices across the United States.
