US approves $2.1 billion Patriot missile package for Ukraine with allied funding

US approves $2.1 billion Patriot missile package for Ukraine with allied funding

The State Department announced approval for the proposed sale of Patriot air defense interceptors, marking a significant step in bolstering Ukraine's defensive capabilities against sustained Russian military operations. The funding arrangement ensures no American budget resources are deployed, with the three allied nations covering the full cost through a US programme mechanism.

Kyiv had previously raised concerns about delays in receiving the vital munitions, with Ukrainian officials warning of dwindling supplies needed to intercept Russian ballistic missiles and aerial attacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has cited ammunition shortages as a critical vulnerability as tensions with the Trump administration have intensified in recent weeks.

The State Department framed the sale as advancing broader American strategic interests in Europe. "This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe," the department said in a statement.

The arrangement reflects a coordinated approach among Western allies to sustain Ukraine's air defense systems without direct US government expenditure. The 500-missile package represents a substantial addition to Ukraine's existing Patriot inventory as Russia continues its aerial bombardment campaign across Ukrainian territory.
