US-Canada trade tensions escalate as tariff negotiations collapse
The United States and Canada have plunged deeper into a trade dispute following the breakdown of negotiations, with both nations imposing significant new tariffs on each other's goods. Washington and Ottawa traded blame on Saturday after high-level trade talks ended without agreement late Friday, prompting immediate retaliatory measures from both sides. The United States has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on approximately USD 20 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada has announced it will implement counter-tariffs beginning September 8.
The American duties will affect roughly 5 per cent of Canada's annual exports to the United States, encompassing a diverse range of products from sporting equipment to medical supplies. Canadian Prime Minister Carney indicated Ottawa would respond with targeted protective tariffs across multiple sectors, including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.
Neither country has indicated plans to resume negotiations in the near term, signalling a hardening of positions in the dispute. Analysts suggest the breakdown reflects a broader erosion of trust between the two neighbouring nations, with economists warning that sustained tariff measures could have cascading effects on supply chains and consumer costs throughout North America.
