US-China tensions simmer despite Trump-Xi summit warmth
While a recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping was marked by unusual cordiality, serious differences between the two powers persist, according to a senior Trump administration official. Republican Senator Steve Daines said both nations must maintain dialogue to address long-standing disputes.

Fundamental disagreements between Washington and Beijing remain unresolved despite the apparent goodwill generated by Xi Jinping's recent visit to Washington, according to Republican Senator Steve Daines, a key Trump administration intermediary in US-China relations.
Daines, who played an instrumental backchannel role preceding the summit, stressed the importance of sustained engagement between the two nations. "Both sides admit we've got some serious differences. But the answer is not to retreat. The answer is to stay engaged," he told the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post.
The senator's comments come as tensions surface over specific policy areas, including Beijing's control of critical mineral supplies. US Ambassador to China David Perdue recently accused China of "weaponising" its dominant position in the minerals sector, highlighting the trade and supply chain challenges that continue to strain bilateral relations.
Despite the cordiality displayed during Xi's recent visit to the United States, ongoing disputes spanning trade, technology, and resource access underscore the complexity of US-China relations. Officials on both sides acknowledge the gravity of their differences while emphasizing the need for continued diplomatic channels to prevent escalation.
