The U.S. State Department has greenlit a $1 billion defence package for the UAE centred on the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS), according to official announcements. The system converts conventional unguided rockets into precision-guided munitions, enabling more targeted strikes while reducing collateral damage concerns.
The weaponry is specifically designed to address the proliferation of drone threats across the Gulf, allowing defence forces to neutralise aerial targets without deploying expensive air-to-air missiles. This capability has become increasingly relevant as regional powers, particularly Iran, have expanded their unmanned aircraft capabilities in recent years.
The sale underscores deepening U.S. security commitments to Gulf Arab states amid ongoing regional tensions. The UAE, a key American strategic partner in the Middle East, has faced periodic drone and missile attacks attributed to Iran-aligned groups, prompting investment in air defence modernisation.
The approval requires Congressional notification, though such military sales to Gulf allies typically proceed without significant legislative opposition. The package is expected to strengthen the Emirates' ability to counter aerial threats while bolstering broader regional security architecture aligned with American interests.
