US Coast Guard rescues 16 from Pacific shipwreck; 11 still missing

A young US Coast Guard rescue swimmer conducted an extensive operation to retrieve 16 survivors from a capsized boat in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico's Baja California peninsula. The rescue effort was initiated following a distress call reporting the vessel's capsizing in the waters off the Mexican coast.

The rescue swimmer spent two hours in darkness conducting the retrieval operation, working to locate and extract the survivors from the water. The challenging conditions underscored the risks inherent in maritime rescue operations in the region.

Search and rescue teams scoured over 2,441 square miles of ocean in efforts to locate additional survivors and victims. However, authorities suspended the search operation with 11 people still unaccounted for, presumed lost in the incident.

The 16 rescued individuals received medical care following their extraction from the water. They were subsequently processed under US immigration law, which governs the handling of migrants and mariners intercepted in US waters or by US authorities.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the vessel's capsizing, including the cause of the incident and the vessel's operational status at the time of the distress call.
