The United States State Department issued a formal statement opposing what it characterised as Chinese coercion in international relations, following the announcement of sanctions against senior officials from Belize and Paraguay. The move underscores escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing over diplomatic influence in Latin America and the Caribbean region.

US officials indicated that the sanctioned ministers had faced pressure from Chinese authorities linked to their countries' diplomatic positions. The sanctions represent Washington's response to what it views as Beijing's use of economic and political leverage to manipulate foreign governments' international alignment and decision-making.

The incident reflects broader strategic competition between the United States and China for influence across developing nations. Washington has consistently opposed what it terms coercive diplomatic practices, arguing that such tactics undermine sovereignty and democratic processes in target countries.

Both Belize and Paraguay have historical diplomatic ties with Taiwan, a self-governed island that China claims as its own. Beijing has intensified efforts in recent years to isolate Taiwan internationally by pressuring countries to sever official relations and recognise the People's Republic of China instead.
