US condemns Chinese sanctions against Belize, Paraguay officials

The Trump administration has denounced what it characterizes as Chinese coercion against nations maintaining diplomatic ties with Taiwan, following Beijing's move to sanction officials from Belize and Paraguay.

The US State Department said it opposes "coercion and aggression" by China targeting countries that exercise their sovereign prerogatives, including decisions on international relations and engagement with other territories.

The sanctions against the Belizean and Paraguayan ministers came in response to their interactions with Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory. Beijing has progressively used diplomatic and economic pressure to isolate the island, which is separately governed and maintains formal ties with a shrinking number of countries.

The US statement underscores Washington's position on Taiwan's status in the region and reflects broader tensions between the United States and China over influence in the Indo-Pacific. The matter highlights the diplomatic challenges facing smaller nations caught between competing great power interests, particularly regarding their relationships with Taiwan.

Neither Belize nor Paraguay currently recognizes Taiwan as an independent state, making the sanctioned ministers' interactions with the island a point of friction with Beijing.
