US Court Dismisses Trump Administration's Harvard Admissions Data Lawsuit

A United States District Judge has thrown out a case brought by the Trump administration's Justice Department against Harvard University over the institution's refusal to hand over admissions data during a federal investigation. Judge Myong Joun determined that the government had not exhausted the necessary procedural steps before resorting to litigation to obtain the records.

The Justice Department had accused Harvard of "thwarting" its investigative efforts and claimed the university violated federal law by refusing to comply with demands for admissions records. Officials argued that the data was essential to ensure the Ivy League institution ceased using affirmative action in its student selection process. They had requested that the court order Harvard to surrender the materials.

However, Judge Joun found that the agency had not followed established legal frameworks for obtaining such information. "Before taking enforcement action under the statutory framework, the agency must advise the recipient of its failure to comply and determine that compliance cannot be secured by voluntary means," the judge wrote in the ruling.

Despite dismissing the immediate lawsuit, Judge Joun indicated that the underlying dispute remains unresolved. The ruling does not prevent the Justice Department from pursuing the matter through proper channels or refiling legal action if it follows the required procedural steps. The decision underscores the importance of administrative compliance protocols in civil enforcement matters.
