US Defence Secretary Hegseth announces drone command, military leadership cuts

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a comprehensive overhaul of American military operations on Wednesday, outlining what he termed his "State of the Force" address to junior officers and enlisted leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. The reforms include creation of a new unified drone command and a substantial 20 per cent reduction in the nation's general and admiral positions, representing one of the most significant leadership restructuring efforts in recent years.

Beyond command reorganisation, Hegseth revealed plans for the Pentagon to establish an Office of Religious Affairs and announced the first construction of a new military base in four decades. The Defence Department will also launch a comprehensive study on future warfare dynamics, he said, with the initiative to be led in part by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The announcements come amid significant geopolitical developments affecting US military posture. The United States is currently seven months into military operations with Iran with no clear resolution timeline, while the Defence Department has intensified operations in Latin America targeting alleged drug trafficking networks. Recent operations have resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and numerous strikes against suspected trafficking vessels in the region.

Hegseth's reforms underscore the Trump administration's emphasis on military readiness and operational efficiency. The restructuring proposals reflect broader strategic shifts in how the Pentagon approaches emerging security challenges, including expanded unmanned warfare capabilities and revised command structures designed to streamline decision-making processes. The involvement of private sector figures in warfare strategy assessment signals the administration's inclination to incorporate civilian technological expertise into military planning.
