Taiwan took delivery of its first two F-16V Viper fighter jets on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a major military modernization program that has drawn sharp criticism from China. The aircraft arrived as part of a larger 66-jet order valued at approximately $8 billion, originally approved in 2019.
The F-16V represents a significant technological leap for Taiwan's air force, featuring advanced avionics, improved engines, and enhanced combat capabilities compared to earlier variants. The delivery comes at a time of heightened military activity by China, which has ramped up air incursions near Taiwan in recent months.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry characterized the jets as essential to maintaining air superiority and strengthening the island's defensive posture. Officials indicated that the remaining aircraft from the $8 billion contract would arrive in phases over the coming years, with delivery timelines dependent on production schedules and training requirements.
Beijing has consistently opposed foreign military aid to Taiwan, viewing the island as a breakaway province. Chinese officials are expected to lodge formal protests with Washington over the delivery, though such arms sales have continued despite Beijing's objections. The F-16V acquisition underscores Taiwan's efforts to modernize its aging fleet and maintain credible deterrence against potential military action from across the Taiwan Strait.
