US Central Command has established a dedicated task force focused on intercepting overland smuggling routes and supply chains flowing into Iran, according to Commander Brad Cooper. The operation represents Washington's latest effort to tighten pressure on Tehran through interdiction of critical military and financial resources.
Cooper stated that the task force would work to significantly constrain Iran's ability to fund designated terrorist organisations and reconstruct weapons manufacturing facilities. The initiative also aims to limit Tehran's capacity to resupply and modernise its military forces, which have faced recurring sanctions from Western nations.
The announcement comes amid broader US efforts to counter Iranian regional activities and influence. Previous American operations have targeted maritime smuggling networks, with this land-based task force complementing existing naval interdiction campaigns across the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters.
The new formation underscores continued US military engagement in countering what Washington characterises as destabilising Iranian activities across the Middle East. Regional experts have noted that such operations face considerable logistical challenges given the expansive border terrain across which such routes operate.
