US extends social media screening for visa applicants from October

The United States Department of State has announced that it will extend mandatory social media screening to three additional visa categories effective October 1. The expanded programme will apply to foreign journalists and certain professional categories seeking entry to the United States, alongside applicants from Canada and Mexico.

Under the revised regulations, visa applicants falling under these new categories will be required to provide their social media handles and online identities as part of the standard application process. Consular officials will then conduct reviews of applicants' digital presence to assess security and admissibility concerns.

The move represents a continuation of the US government's broader effort to strengthen vetting procedures for visa applicants. The screening programme was initially implemented for certain visa categories and has been progressively expanded to cover additional applicant groups.

Official statements indicate that the social media reviews are intended to identify potential security risks and verify information provided in visa applications. Applicants will be informed of the requirement during the application process, allowing them to disclose their social media accounts voluntarily.

The expansion comes as visa security procedures globally continue to evolve. Applicants affected by the new rules are advised to review detailed guidance from US embassies and consulates regarding the submission of social media information.
