The US State Department's September 2026 visa bulletin has brought welcome news for Indian families navigating the American immigration system, with noticeable advancement in family-sponsored green card priority dates. The movement marks a departure from the extended backlogs that have characterised family immigration pathways in recent years, offering relief to thousands of applicants waiting for visa availability.

Family preference categories—which cover sponsorship of adult children, siblings, and married children of US citizens—registered significant progress during the month. This acceleration reflects the State Department's allocation of available immigrant visa numbers to these categories after earlier months faced competing demands from other visa classifications.

However, employment-based immigration pathways presented a contrasting picture. The EB-2 category, designated for professionals holding advanced degrees and experienced workers, remained unavailable for Indian applicants during September. The EB-5 investor visa category similarly showed no forward movement, continuing a pattern of limited availability driven by per-country numerical caps that disproportionately affect nationals from high-demand countries.

Immigration experts note that the family-sponsored movement, while encouraging, reflects the cyclical nature of visa bulletin updates rather than systemic changes to immigration law. Indian applicants in employment-based categories continue facing multi-year waits as per-country limits restrict the number of visas available regardless of overall demand.
