US formally designates Hezbollah Iranian proxy, targets funding network

The US Treasury Department has taken fresh action against Hezbollah, officially designating the Lebanon-based militant organization as a proxy force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force. The designation underscores Washington's assertion that the group operates as an extension of Iranian military command rather than as an independent Lebanese entity.

Accompanying the formal designation, the Treasury announced sanctions targeting Hezbollah's financial networks and funding mechanisms. Officials indicated the measure aims to disrupt the group's access to resources and limit its operational capacity across the region.

The action represents an escalation in US efforts to contain Hezbollah's influence and its ties to Tehran. US officials have long contended that Hezbollah functions under direct Iranian control and receives substantial financial and military support from the Islamic Republic.

Hezbollah, which emerged in the 1980s during Lebanon's civil war with Iranian backing, maintains a significant political presence in Lebanon while operating military and security wings designated as terrorist organizations by several Western nations.
