US grapples with measles surge as cases hit 35-year peak

Health officials across the United States have reported a significant spike in measles cases, marking the highest number of infections recorded in 35 years. The outbreak has prompted concern among public health agencies, which are intensifying surveillance and response efforts across affected states.

State health departments have confirmed at least eight deaths attributable to the disease, underscoring the serious health threat posed by the current outbreak. Measles, caused by a highly contagious virus, can lead to severe complications including pneumonia, encephalitis, and death, particularly among vulnerable populations such as young children and immunocompromised individuals.

Despite the availability of an effective vaccine, measles remains a preventable disease. Public health officials are urging vaccination, particularly in communities where immunisation rates have fallen below protective thresholds. The resurgence reflects declining immunisation coverage in certain regions, creating conditions favourable for disease transmission.

Health authorities are working to identify transmission chains and increase vaccination uptake in affected areas. Measles spreads through respiratory droplets and can infect up to 90 per cent of unvaccinated individuals exposed to an infected person, making rapid intervention critical to containing the outbreak.
