US-Greenland Defence Accord to be Signed Next Week, Requires Parliamentary Approval
The United States and Denmark are set to formalise a strategic defence agreement involving Greenland during the UN General Assembly next week. However, the pact will require legislative approval from both Danish and Greenlandic parliaments before it becomes operational.

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's office announced that the three governments will sign the US-Greenland agreement during proceedings at the United Nations General Assembly in the coming week. The accord is expected to strengthen defence and security cooperation in the strategically important Arctic region.
While the signing ceremony will proceed as scheduled, both the Danish parliament and Greenland's home rule government must ratify the agreement before it can be formally enforced. This parliamentary review process represents a crucial step in finalising the defence arrangement between the nations.
Frederiksken emphasised that the agreement fully respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Greenland and Denmark. The Danish leader stressed that the pact upholds the rights of both populations to self-determination, addressing concerns that have been raised about external powers gaining influence over the North Atlantic territory.
The defence agreement is seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen security frameworks in the Arctic as geopolitical competition in the region intensifies. Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has become increasingly significant to global powers due to its strategic location and natural resources.
