US housing cooperative secures $23 million for major redevelopment project

A community-based housing cooperative in San Francisco has received a significant financial boost to proceed with an ambitious redevelopment initiative aimed at expanding affordable housing while safeguarding resident ownership. The $23 million in funding will enable Freedom West Homes to construct 2,400 new residential units as part of its broader mission to prevent displacement in historically Black neighborhoods.

The cooperative model prioritizes the retention of existing shareholders within the community, ensuring that current residents maintain ownership stakes as new construction progresses. This approach contrasts with conventional redevelopment projects that often result in displacement of longtime inhabitants as neighborhoods undergo transformation.

The project focuses on replacing aging infrastructure and dilapidated structures with new housing stock while maintaining community control and ownership for Black and immigrant family members. The initiative reflects growing recognition of the need for community-centered solutions to housing challenges in urban areas experiencing demographic shifts and rising property values.

Freedom West Homes was established in response to decades of displacement pressures facing Black residents in San Francisco's historically African-American neighborhoods. The cooperative model allows residents to build equity collectively while retaining autonomy over development decisions that affect their community. The funding secured for this phase represents a significant milestone in demonstrating the viability of community-owned housing solutions as an alternative to market-driven development approaches.
