US identifies Korean War soldier missing 75 years; burial set for Maryland

Pvt. Boyd disappeared during combat operations in Korea at an exceptionally young age, becoming one of thousands of service members whose fates remained uncertain for decades. His remains were recovered but could not be identified at the time, leading to his classification under the designation Unknown X-1642 in military records.

The identification was made possible through modern forensic techniques unavailable during the Korean War era. DNA analysis and other advanced methods allowed military investigators to match the remains to Boyd's identity with certainty, bringing closure to a case that had remained open for 75 years.

The soldier will receive full military honors at a dignified burial ceremony scheduled for October 21, 2026, in Owings Mills, Maryland. The delayed funeral underscores the United States military's continued commitment to identifying and properly honoring service members who died in historical conflicts, particularly those from the Korean War period when thousands remained unaccounted for.

The identification of Pvt. Boyd adds to a broader effort by the Department of Defense and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory to resolve cases of missing personnel from World War II, the Korean War, and other historical military operations. Officials continue to work on identifying additional remains held in military archives.
