US imposes sanctions on Chandigarh businessman over Iran oil evasion

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has added Suniel Kumar Sharma and his spouse to its sanctions list, along with multiple companies linked to their operations, citing their role in helping Iran bypass global oil trade curbs. The action targets an alleged scheme that utilized false company registrations to mask transactions and facilitate hydrocarbon sales in violation of US sanctions regimes.

Sharma and his associated entities are accused of providing critical infrastructure and financial services that enabled Iranian entities to continue oil exports despite international restrictions designed to limit Tehran's revenue streams. The fraudulent registration mechanisms allowed sanctioned Iranian actors to operate with reduced visibility in global markets.

The sanctions designation effectively freezes any US-based assets belonging to Sharma, his wife and their companies, and prohibits American citizens and entities from conducting business with them. The move reflects Washington's continued enforcement of secondary sanctions against third-country nationals and businesses that facilitate Iranian sanctions evasion.

India, as a major importer of Iranian oil, has faced US pressure regarding its energy transactions with Tehran. The sanctioning of an Indian businessman underscores the extraterritorial reach of American sanctions enforcement and its application to individuals across South Asia engaged in prohibited Iranian trade activities.
