The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has designated two firms based in India's financial capital and five individuals for facilitating oil transactions with Iran, according to enforcement actions announced this week. The sanctions represent Washington's latest effort to restrict financial flows to Iran and disrupt networks operating in circumvention of American economic restrictions.
The individuals and entities targeted were accused of participating in a scheme to disguise the origin and ownership of Iranian crude oil shipments, according to US officials. The alleged scheme involved structuring transactions to obscure the Iranian connection and evade detection by international financial monitoring systems.
Under the sanctions, all assets held by the designated firms and individuals within US jurisdiction are frozen, and American persons are generally prohibited from conducting business with them. The sanctions also carry secondary penalties that can restrict access to the US financial system for any entity that knowingly engages in significant transactions with the targeted parties.
This action underscores the Trump administration's hardline approach toward Iran sanctions enforcement following the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement. Indian companies and nationals have faced repeated US sanctions designations in recent years over allegations of facilitating Iran trade in violation of American restrictions.
The development may complicate India's energy security calculations, as New Delhi has historically relied on Iranian crude imports despite US pressure to cease such purchases. India has gradually reduced Iranian oil purchases in recent years amid mounting US sanctions pressure but has not entirely eliminated them.
