US imposes sanctions on Rwanda defence ministry over M23 rebel support

The US State Department announced sanctions targeting Rwanda's Ministry of Defence on grounds of providing material support to M23 rebels operating in eastern DRC. The measure reflects Washington's frustration with Rwanda's alleged continued backing of the militia group, which has been accused of destabilising efforts across the volatile region.

The sanctions come despite a ceasefire agreement facilitated by the United States in December, which was intended to halt hostilities between M23 forces and Congolese military units. However, reports indicate that fighting has persisted in the disputed territories since the truce was signed, undermining hopes for a lasting peace settlement.

Rwanda has repeatedly denied direct involvement in M23 operations, though numerous international investigations and reports have documented Kigali's military and logistical support for the rebel group. The designation of Rwanda's defence ministry signals that Washington views the allegations as credible and serious enough to warrant economic pressure.

The conflict in eastern DRC has claimed thousands of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians over three decades. The sanctions represent one of the strongest international responses to date regarding Rwanda's alleged role in the ongoing instability, though their practical impact on military operations in the region remains uncertain.
