US imposes tariffs on Canadian imports as trade tensions escalate
The United States has implemented import restrictions on nearly USD 1 billion worth of Canadian goods, including alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motorcycles, marking a further escalation in bilateral trade tensions. The ban took effect early Tuesday, targeting a range of Canadian products as part of a broader trade dispute between the two nations. While the restricted imports represent a modest fraction of the USD 880 billion annual two-way trade between the countries, the action underscores deepening trade friction between Washington and its northern neighbour.
US President Trump has invoked Depression-era trade legislation to justify the restrictions, claiming Canada discriminates against American producers of dairy, automobiles and alcoholic beverages. The latest tariffs follow Trump's earlier imposition of 50 per cent duties on approximately USD 20 billion worth of Canadian imports initiated over the summer.
Trade experts warn the escalating measures risk further deterioration of bilateral relations. "Such import restrictions are unlikely to ease the mounting trade tensions between the United States and Canada," according to trade policy analysts familiar with the ongoing dispute.
The restrictions represent another chapter in Trump's protectionist trade agenda, which has positioned Canada—traditionally America's closest trading ally—as a focal point of US tariff policy. Both nations have faced criticism for their hardline stances as negotiations have stalled.
