US Justice Department probes TV pool's Trump coverage halt for antitrust violations

The US Department of Justice announced Saturday that it is examining whether five major television broadcasters violated antitrust laws through their collective decision to suspend presidential coverage last month. The investigation was triggered after the White House television press pool—comprising ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX and NBC—ceased coverage following the administration's decision to exclude CNN, MSNBC and Politico from the White House.

Emily Covington, a Department of Justice spokesperson, stated that group boycotts among competing business entities could potentially breach US antitrust regulations. "The Antitrust Division is simply investigating to determine whether these news organizations have violated the antitrust laws," Covington said in a statement released Saturday evening.

The White House press pool operates on a rotating basis to ensure news outlets share access to presidential events and announcements. The decision by the five major networks to coordinate a halt in coverage raises questions about the extent to which news organizations can collectively respond to restrictions on media access.

The investigation reflects broader tensions over press freedom and access to the presidency, with implications for how news coverage of high-ranking government officials is controlled and distributed. The five broadcasters have been contacted for comment regarding the Justice Department's inquiry.
