US legislation grants Trump authority to impose steep tariffs on Russian energy buyers
Congress has passed legislation enabling the incoming Trump administration to levy tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries purchasing Russian energy. The bill, which cleared the Senate before House approval, directly targets major importers of Russian oil and gas.

The US House of Representatives approved the measure with a 262-159 vote, following earlier Senate passage. The legislation grants the executive significant discretionary power to penalise nations that maintain substantial energy ties with Russia, a provision that could have implications for India given its substantial Russian crude oil imports.
The bill represents a hardline approach to enforcing US sanctions against Russia and pressuring allied nations to reduce their Russian energy dependence.
