US man charged with fentanyl poisoning death of college student in New York

Moises Freire faces charges related to the death of Annabel Richter, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City. Authorities allege that Freire, who had no affiliation with the institution, provided fentanyl to Richter and her roommate during an incident at their dormitory in Manhattan's Chelsea neighbourhood on March 18.

According to the indictment filed by the Manhattan US Attorney's Office, both women lost consciousness following the alleged drug administration. They were subsequently transported to hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Richter, who never regained consciousness after the incident, died on March 21. Her roommate survived the ordeal and received treatment for fentanyl poisoning. The case has prompted renewed scrutiny regarding dormitory security and substance abuse risks on college campuses.

The charges against Freire include serious offences related to drug distribution and the circumstances surrounding Richter's death. The Manhattan US Attorney's Office continues investigating the incident as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events surrounding the tragic outcome.
