US military plans public execution of Fort Hood shooting suspect

Officials at the US Department of Defense confirmed that the execution of Nidal Hasan, who was convicted in relation to a mass shooting at Fort Hood military base in Texas, will be open to public viewing through a livestream format.

Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding dozens of others in the November 2009 attack at the Texas military installation. The shooting remains one of the deadliest mass casualings on a US military base in history.

The decision to make the execution public marks a departure from typical military protocols, which generally restrict access to capital punishment proceedings. The Pentagon's approach reflects ongoing debates over transparency in military justice systems and victims' rights.

Hasan has maintained his conviction through the appellate process, and the execution represents the culmination of a lengthy legal proceeding spanning more than a decade. The livestream format is intended to allow wider public access to the proceedings while maintaining security protocols required for the execution.
