The United States Southern Command confirmed it carried out the strike against the go-fast vessel as part of ongoing counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean. The four individuals on board were described by US officials as being involved in narcotics smuggling activities.
The operation reflects an intensification of American military action against suspected drug-trafficking vessels since September 2025. The US has sought to disrupt narcotics smuggling routes that originate in South America and transit through the Caribbean toward North America.
However, the strikes have drawn criticism from international human rights organizations, which have raised concerns about the legality of the operations. Rights groups have characterized some of these military actions as unlawful extrajudicial killings, citing the lack of judicial process and accountability mechanisms.
The US Southern Command maintains that its operations target vessels and personnel directly involved in narcotics trafficking and that appropriate protocols are followed. The broader campaign has become increasingly controversial as the frequency of such strikes has grown in recent months.
