The USS Canberra (LCS-30), a Littoral Combat Ship of the United States Navy, arrived at Colombo's port on Sunday morning for resupply and maintenance activities. The vessel, under the command of Commander C Towles, was received in accordance with established naval protocols by representatives of the Sri Lanka Navy.
The USS Canberra is part of the US Navy's Littoral Combat Ship programme, designed for operations in coastal and shallow-water environments. At 127.6 metres in length, the vessel is equipped to conduct a range of maritime missions including anti-submarine warfare, surface combat, and mine countermeasures.
The port call represents ongoing naval cooperation between the United States and Sri Lanka. Such visits are standard practice for international naval forces operating in the Indian Ocean region and typically include crew rest, maintenance, and resupply operations.
The USS Canberra was commissioned into active service on 22 July and continues regular patrols and operational missions throughout the region. The vessel's visit to Colombo underscores the importance of regional maritime engagement and bilateral naval relationships in South Asia.
