The US State Department has ordered the departure of some non-essential personnel and their families from the American embassy in Saudi Arabia, citing heightened security threats posed by Houthi militants. The decision marks a precautionary measure as the Iran-aligned group has intensified its operations in the region.
The Houthis, based in Yemen, have conducted numerous attacks against regional targets in recent months, including drone and missile strikes that have prompted concerns among Western nations with diplomatic and military presence in the Arabian Peninsula. The militant group has repeatedly targeted facilities and vessels it considers aligned with Saudi and US interests.
US diplomatic missions across the Middle East have periodically adjusted staffing levels based on threat assessments. The partial evacuation from Riyadh represents standard protocol for managing personnel safety during periods of elevated regional instability.
The order does not affect essential embassy operations or security personnel required to maintain diplomatic functions. The US maintains a significant diplomatic presence in Saudi Arabia, a key regional ally and major oil producer, despite the current security advisory.
