US Pentagon labels Confucius Institutes a national security threat
The US Defense Department has formally designated Chinese-funded Confucius Institutes operating on American university campuses as a national security concern. The move reflects growing scrutiny of Beijing's cultural and educational initiatives in the United States.

The Pentagon's classification, announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Friday, marks an escalation in US concerns over Chinese influence operations within American higher education institutions. Confucius Institutes, which operate as cultural and language centers funded by the Chinese government, have faced increasing scrutiny from US policymakers and security officials in recent years.
The designation suggests the Trump administration views these institutions as potential vehicles for espionage, intellectual property theft, or broader efforts to shape American public opinion. Several US universities have already closed their Confucius Institutes in recent years amid political pressure and security concerns.
China has long maintained that the institutes serve purely educational purposes, offering language instruction and cultural programming. Beijing is likely to view the Pentagon's formal designation as another example of what it considers unjustified Cold War-style hostility toward Chinese educational initiatives.
The move aligns with broader US policy scrutiny of Chinese institutions and individuals in America, including restrictions on visas, technology transfers, and academic collaborations. Security officials have expressed concern about potential risks ranging from surveillance to the promotion of narratives favorable to Beijing's geopolitical interests.
