US pilot programme successfully recycles tonnes of fibreglass boats

A pilot recycling programme in Rhode Island has successfully processed 80 short tons of fibreglass boats, offering a model for handling marine waste that typically ends up in landfills. The initiative, funded by a $105,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), addressed a growing environmental challenge posed by the disposal of end-of-life recreational and commercial vessels.

Fibreglass boats present unique recycling difficulties due to their composite construction, which combines resin and glass fibres in ways that make traditional recycling methods ineffective. The Rhode Island project developed and tested practical solutions for breaking down these materials into recoverable components that can be repurposed or safely disposed of.

The programme's success highlights the potential for expanded boat recycling infrastructure across coastal regions. As recreational boating remains popular and ageing vessels accumulate, establishing standardised recycling pathways could significantly reduce environmental impact while potentially creating economic value from recovered materials.
