US recreates Theodore Roosevelt's 1901 presidential oath ceremony
More than a century after Theodore Roosevelt assumed the US presidency in a Buffalo library following William McKinley's assassination, organisers have recreated the historic ceremony at the same location to mark the 125th anniversary.

Theodore Roosevelt took the 35-word presidential oath on September 14, 1901, in the library of Ansley Wilcox's Buffalo home after McKinley's death thrust him into the nation's highest office at age 42. On Wednesday, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site hosted a reenactment of the pivotal moment, replicating the event in the original room where the swearing-in took place.
Actor Joe Wiegand portrayed the young Roosevelt for the anniversary commemoration, arriving in Buffalo by train as the historical Roosevelt had done in 1901. The recreation drew visitors keen to witness a key moment in American presidential history.
Roosevelt's rapid ascension to the presidency came as a shock to the political establishment of the era. His time in office, spanning nearly eight years, would prove transformative, reshaping American foreign policy and domestic reform. The Buffalo library where his presidency began has since become a museum dedicated to preserving this pivotal chapter of US history.
